Application of molecular gene biosynthesis to novel lignin

The Belgian company Elserive Scientific has successfully used molecular genetic engineering to biosynthesize new lignin in trees. This modified lignin is easily extracted from trees. Methylation of lignin monomers using several clonally-encoded enzymes [2 dihydroxycinnamic acids, 5-hydroxyferulic acid, oxy-methyltransferase (COMT) and coffee-COA oxygen-methyltransferases Enzymes] as well as genes encoding enzymes, pathways for the biosynthesis of lignin in trees [cinnamoyl-COA reductase and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenation gene (CAD)]. The effects of these enzymes on the lignin content and structure change rules in poplar were studied. The results showed that the structure of lignin monomer in poplar was obviously affected by COMT, and transgenic poplar could reduce the activity of CAD. This kind of poplar has good pulping performance. Because the content of extractable lignin in poplar wood is high, it can reduce chemical dosage and energy consumption during pulping, increase pulp yield and reduce wastewater pollution load.
